If you can smell gas: do not switch anything electrical, do not use a phone inside, call 000, then call AusNet for the gas network, then call us for the appliance side.
Type A gas appliances we work on
Type A appliances are the gas equipment used in homes and most businesses — the things a licensed gasfitter is allowed to commission and sign off. That covers gas cookers and freestanding ovens, wall furnaces and space heaters, decorative gas fires, gas storage hot water units, and continuous-flow (instantaneous) gas hot water. We connect, disconnect, service and repair all of them, and we test for leaks and correct combustion every time.
Gas hot water is the most common gas call in Traralgon. Storage units fail on the pilot, the thermocouple or the valve; continuous-flow units lock out on flame failure, ignition or a dirty burner. A service — cleaning the burner, checking the gas pressure, testing the flue — will keep a good unit running for years, and we will tell you when a unit is past saving.
Gas heaters ahead of the Gippsland winter
Before the cold hits, the gas space heaters and wall furnaces that carry a lot of Traralgon homes through winter need a service. A poorly burning gas heater produces carbon monoxide, which is the reason licensed gas work and a proper flue check matter. We service, repair and where needed replace space heaters, and we check the flue and the room ventilation as part of the job. This is not the work to put off or to give to someone unlicensed.
Energy Safe Victoria compliance
Type A gas work has to be signed off. We issue the compliance documentation Energy Safe Victoria requires — the gas compliance certificate for notifiable work — and we keep the record so the appliance is legal, insurable and safe for the next owner or tenant. If you are selling or renting a property with gas appliances, that paperwork matters. We do not cut corners on it.
Gas leak attendance
If you suspect a gas leak at an appliance or a fitting inside the property, isolate at the gas meter if it is safe to do so, ventilate, call 000, then AusNet for the network. Once the network side is clear, we attend to find and fix the leak on the appliance or the private gas line, pressure-test the installation, and sign it back on. A simple joint repair is one job; a corroded private gas line is another, and we will scope it honestly.
New gas connections and conversions
If you are adding a gas cooker, converting a hot water unit to gas, or running a new gas line for a heater, we size the line to the full connected load (not just the one appliance) so a second appliance later does not starve the first. We pressure-test before commissioning, and we issue the compliance paperwork. We will also talk you through the heat-pump hot water alternative if you are weighing up replacing an old gas unit — there are Victorian rebates for that pathway.
Gas line sizing and the full connected load
A gas line that was sized for one appliance will starve the moment a second is added — a common fault on the older Traralgon homes where a gas cooker and a gas hot water unit share a line that was only ever meant for one. When we run a new gas line or upgrade an existing one, we size to the full connected load, not just the appliance in front of us, so a future addition does not leave the cooker with a weak flame or the hot water unit short of gas. We pressure-test the line before commissioning, check the working pressure at the appliance with a manometer, and issue the Energy Safe Victoria compliance certificate. On the older galvanised gas lines still common in the weatherboard stock, we will tell you honestly when a line has reached the end of its life and a replacement in copper or composite is safer than a repair.
